Fabrication and Applications of Gabion Meshes for Bank Protection

Bank-protection gabion mesh is mechanically woven from high-strength low-carbon steel wire. The wire possesses a tensile strength of at least 38 kg/mm² and a zinc coating weight typically exceeding 245 g/m²; the diameter of the edge wire is generally greater than that of the mesh wire. The length of the double-twisted wire section must be no less than 50 mm to ensure that the metallic and PVC coatings on the wire remain intact during the twisting process.


Advantages of gabion cages:

1. The flexible structure adapts to slope movements without structural failure, offering superior safety and stability compared to rigid structures.

2. They exhibit strong resistance to erosion and can withstand water flow velocities of up to 6 m/s.

3. The structure is inherently permeable, accommodating natural groundwater dynamics and filtration processes; suspended solids and silt settle within the voids between the stone fill, fostering natural vegetation growth and facilitating the gradual restoration of the original ecological environment. A gabion is a mesh structure made of wire or polymer strands designed to hold stone fill in place. Wire cages are constructed from either woven or welded wire mesh. Both types can be galvanized, and woven wire cages may additionally be PVC-coated. When filled with hard, weather-resistant stone, the material resists rapid degradation due to abrasion within the cage or mattress. Gabions filled with different types of stone exhibit varying characteristics; angular stones interlock effectively, resulting in gabions that are resistant to deformation.
