Gabion mesh, also known as river gabion mesh, wire mesh cage, gabion mattress, gabion box, zinc-aluminum alloy gabion, hexagonal mesh, etc., is made of high corrosion-resistant, high-strength, and ductile low-carbon steel wire or PVC-coated steel wire, woven mechanically. According to ASTM A 975 and EN10223 standards, the diameter of the low-carbon steel wire used varies depending on the engineering design requirements. The wire diameter is typically between 2.0-4.0mm. For hexagonal wire mesh woven with PVC-coated metal wire, PVC (metal) wire with an outer diameter of 3.0mm to 4.0mm is used. The outer frame edge wire uses wire one gauge thicker than the hexagonal wire. The tensile strength of the steel wire is no less than 38kg/m², and the metal coating weight is usually higher than 245g/m². The diameter of the edge wire of the gabion mesh is usually larger than the diameter of the mesh wire, and the length of the double-twisted section should not be less than 50mm to ensure that the metal and PVC coatings of the twisted wire are not damaged. River gabion mesh is mainly used to guide river water. Rivers usually flow along their inherent riverbeds, and river channels may have naturally formed meandering channels. If a flood occurs, the water volume is immense and the current is rapid. Due to inertia, the water tends to flow in a straight line, violently impacting the original riverbed and embankments, potentially causing the river to change course, resulting in immense disaster. To mitigate the erosion of riverbanks by swift currents, gabion baskets or gabion mattresses are laid on the inner side of the riverbank or along the edge of the riverbed. The surging river water directly impacts the gabion baskets or mattresses, thus protecting the riverbank or riverbed. At bends in the river channel, the river water is redirected by the gabion baskets or mattresses, flowing along the established channel. This guides the river water safely. Gabion mesh is also used in spillways and diversion dams to guide or restrain floodwaters.
