Wide range of applications and development prospects of stainless steel wire mesh

Mar. 20, 2026

Stainless steel wire mesh products are widely used in industrial production and daily life. They are extensively used in mining, petroleum, chemical, construction, machinery accessories, protective netting, packaging netting, barbecue netting, barbecue grill netting, sintering furnace netting, hardware products netting, handicraft netting, vibrating screens, wire baskets, food machinery netting, cookware netting, wall netting, grain, highway, railway, and infrastructure netting. They can also be used as sieves for grading solid materials, for filtering liquids and slurries, in aquaculture, and for civilian applications. In the chemical, metallurgical, and environmental protection industries, stainless steel wire mesh has gradually replaced nylon, plastic, or steel mesh in filter screens and dust collector bags, demonstrating its superior performance in corrosive and high-temperature environments. With the improvement of people's living standards, stainless steel window screens have become popular in southern coastal cities; their aesthetic appeal and durability are unmatched by other materials. They also have wide applications in military and scientific fields. Using stainless steel wire as the inner and outer cladding of metal hoses allows for direct use in aerial refueling hoses in the aviation industry and refueling pipes in the nuclear industry. Stainless steel wire mesh, woven from stainless steel microfilaments, is an essential material for bulletproof vests, cable shielding mesh, and electron colliders.

Due to the wide range of applications, the demand for stainless steel wire mesh has been increasing rapidly with my country's economic development. According to relevant data, in 1998, the national output of fine stainless steel wire was approximately 8,000 tons, while microfilament production was less than 300 tons. In the same year, my country consumed 15,000-16,000 tons of stainless steel wire for mesh weaving alone, including approximately 10,000 tons of fine stainless steel wire and approximately 500 tons of microfilaments. The raw materials for producing fine and microfilaments must be 304 and 316L high-strength wire rod. In the mid-1980s, stainless steel wire drawing technology and products were mainly concentrated in Anping, Hebei Province, and Xinghua and Dongtai, Jiangsu Province. A large number of family-run businesses were scattered throughout these areas, with rudimentary equipment, low-quality products, and some even counterfeit or substandard products. These businesses engaged in fierce price wars, leading to a disorderly state in the stainless steel wire mesh market. In the mid-to-late 1990s, a number of foreign and Taiwanese companies entered the mainland wire drawing market. Due to their strong financial resources and advanced stainless steel drawing technology and equipment, they promoted the development of stainless steel wire mesh in my country.
