Reasons for problems with galvanizing of gabion mesh boxes

The galvanized surface of gabion mesh is primarily for corrosion resistance and a relatively long service life. So, what problems might arise with the galvanizing of gabion boxes? We will explain this in detail below.

(1) If gabion mesh is not rinsed with water or is not rinsed sufficiently after pickling, and is directly introduced into the solvent bath, the acidity of the solvent will increase, resulting in an increase in iron ions; or hydrochloric acid will be used as a flux, causing a layer of iron salts to be coated on the surface of the steel strip, which will be carried into the zinc bath, forming alloy slag that adheres to the surface of the workpiece during zinc plating;

(2) If the solvent is aged, with high iron ion and impurity content, and is not filtered before entering the zinc bath with the steel strip, the viscosity of the zinc bath will increase, making the coating thicker and rougher, with poor adhesion;

(3) If the workpiece is not dried, Zn(OH)2 particles will be formed when the solvent carries water during hot-dip galvanizing, affecting the appearance quality of the product;

(4) The solvent is generally weakly acidic. Failure to heat or low temperature will prolong the drying time and will also corrode the surface of the workpiece, forming adhering iron salts. During zinc plating, alloy slag will be formed on the surface of the workpiece, making the coating surface rough. "White rust" is a common defect in galvanized coatings. The main reasons are the lack of passivation treatment in the galvanizing process, the presence of moisture on the strip steel, or the failure of the passivation solution to achieve passivation. If the strip steel is not completely dried after water cooling and is stored in a humid and poorly ventilated environment, electrochemical corrosion will occur, resulting in "white rust" or gray powdery corrosion deposits. This directly affects the quality of products and projects. This white or gray powdery substance is mainly composed of compounds such as basic zinc carbonate.
